A Message from Victoria Redfearn Cave, Artistic Director
Welcome to the 2024-5 season of Mosaic Children’s Choir!
We are thrilled to celebrate our 10th anniversary season! Our 2023-24 season represented some incredible collaborations, from our performances with the Charlottesville Ballet’s Nutcracker to our partnership with the Virginia Consort to sing the incredible Mass of the Children by John Rutter. We are so proud to be invited and included in community choral events.
In our 2024-25 season, to celebrate our 10th anniversary, we will offer some new opportunities for parent education, host a film festival highlighting years of digital artifacts, finalize our Mosaic theme song composed by our artistic partner and Mosaic parent Dan Sender, and work with a composer in residence to compose some beautiful canons. We also hope to have a special place for our “on location” site, so stay tuned!
Of course we will continue to offer our annual favorite traditions such as our Salon Series concerts, highlighting our multifaceted artists in Mosaic honors, jeans decorating day, Christmas in a Barn, and opera camp. We are now the official children’s choir for the Charlottesville Ballet’s Nutcracker and that will give some of our older singers the opportunity to perform with a full symphony orchestra. We also visit the Colonnades annually around the December holidays and will continue our thriving teen helper program, a volunteer opportunity available to our graduates.
Our Patchwork, Mosaic and Mosaic Honors groups all require a placement interview. This is a face to face meeting that gives families the opportunity to find the right fit for what they are looking for in their music education journey. Students will meet briefly with me to experience a vocal warm-up and sing a familiar tune, like Twinkle. It is meant to be low stress, supportive and helpful. These programs are best suited for families looking for a consistent skills training program where the family can build community over the years. Consistent attendance is needed and all groups perform at least twice a year. The curriculum is designed to scaffold both vocal and social emotional skills necessary to produce our graduates. Our vision is to produce a singer who is trained in multiple disciplines in the arts, a singer who can participate in community arts auditions, rehearsals and performances with professionalism and ease, a singer who knows their voice and how to keep it healthy at various stages of their lives, and a singer who is a culturally competent citizen, making the world a better place with their leadership and involvement in the arts.
Of course, some of our learners are just beginning, or looking for more of an introduction to singing. For these families, we offer our classes where parents can just enroll without a placement interview. All families are always welcome to meet with me, but Pebbles (early childhood) and Prism (practice choir for multi-age students) do not require it. These courses are seven weeks long and meet in the fall and winter/spring. They are non-performing groups and just work on either play based learning (Pebbles) or singing games and introduction to singing skills (Prism.)
We continue to be committed to our mission, 1) to support students in multiple art forms, 2) to perform in creative spaces, and 3) to develop healthy age-appropriate singing habits that will set students up for a lifetime of vocal success.
We welcome you to our community and to experience the magic of the Mosaic.
With gratitude,
Victoria Redfearn Cave, Founder and Artistic Director
