Favorite Traditions

Film Day
Since our first year, Mosaic has created a digital artifact. Part of our creative experience is going “on location” to film interesting movements and interact with an interesting space. We merge these images with audio of our singing to produce our digital signature each year. All singers from Patchwork, Mosaic and Mosaic Honors participate in this process. Locations have included: Luray Caverns, the Glass House Winery, Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Carter’s Mountain, Staircases of Charlottesville, IX Park, a middle school, and the Contemplative Science Center at the University of Virginia.

Salon Series
Mosaic encourages students to join who have other interests in the arts in addition to singing. At least 95% of our honors students are also instrumentalists, actors, or dancers. To feature these performers in their other genres besides singing, we have the salon series events twice a year, once around Halloween and again around Valentine’s Day. This intimate recital inspires younger students to get involved in the arts and creates a community for older students to share their craft.

Nutcracker
Starting in 2022, the Charlottesville Ballet received a grant to hire a full symphony orchestra to perform with their dancers for the Nutcracker. Since then, we have been their resident children’s choir, partnering with them every December. Our singers from Mosaic honors and some invited singers from Mosaic have a chance to sing in the famous “Snowflake” scene. The result is magical and helps us to celebrate the holidays. Even more magical, our singers get to sing with a full symphony orchestra!

Opera Camp
For one week in the summer, singers from Mosaic come together to explore the ultimate form of integrated arts, the opera. We explore storytelling, songs from children’s choir and music theater, do physical and vocal warm-ups, have theater improv sessions, learn about jobs in the arts, meet with guest artists, make fun crafts and study and watch a specific opera and music theater work. Some special favorites from camp are playing chick-a-pig and spot-it, having puppet shows, and drinking tea on the porch. Some of our members even sing with the Charlottesville Opera in the summer!
